In announcing it had completed its review of newly discovered Hillary Clinton emails, the FBI on Sunday affirmed its original recommendation that she should not face charges over her use of a private email server when she was secretary of state.
“The FBI investigative team has been working around the clock to process and review a large volume of emails from a device obtained in connection with an unrelated criminal investigation,” FBI Director James Comey wrote in a letter to federal lawmakers.
“During that process we reviewed all of the communications that were to or from Hillary Clinton while she was secretary of State,” he added. “Based on our review, we have not changed our conclusions that we expressed in July with respect to Secretary Clinton.”
In July, the FBI recommended no charges be filed against Clinton in the case over her use of a private email server.
On October 28 — 11 days before the election — the FBI announced it was reviewing additional emails that could be pertinent to the Clinton probe. The emails were reportedly found during the FBI’s investigation into former Congressman Anthony Weiner’s sexting scandal. Weiner’s wife, Huma Abedin, is a top Clinton aide.
The FBI’s decision to affirm its original findings in the case was announced two days before the general election.
For its part, the U.S. Justice Department released a brief statement Sunday afternoon saying it had “dedicated all necessary resources to conduct this review expeditiously.”
