Contingency Plan In Place If Chicago Teachers Strike Tuesday

The Chicago Teachers Union and Chicago Public Schools district have yet to reach a contract agreement to avert a potential teachers strike this Tuesday.

Negotiations are expected to continue through Monday.

In the event of a Tuesday strike, CPS schools will remain open and provide breakfast and lunch to students who need the meals. Chicago Park District and Chicago Public Library sites will also be open for CPS students.

CPS says all classes and extracurricular activities will be canceled.

“While every CPS school will be open if there is a strike, CPS students can spend the day at any school that is convenient for their families, as long as high schoolers attend high schools and elementary students attend elementary schools,” CPS said in a statement, adding that schools will offer “online learning, physical education, and arts & crafts activities to keep students engaged.”

The Chicago Transit Authority will also provide free rides to students from 5:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Additional information on the school district’s contingency plan can be found here.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Chicago, meanwhile, says it will extend the hours of its clubs for students if there is a teachers strike. Children can access the Boys & Girls Clubs of Chicago sites if they are or register to be a member at their local club. For more information, visit the Boys & Girls Clubs of Chicago’s website at www.bgcc.org or call 312-235-8000.
