Chicagoans will rally downtown Thursday afternoon as part of a national Renters’ Day of Action.
“Housing is in a state of emergency!” reads an announcement for the Chicago rally, to be held at Daley Plaza at 4 p.m. “The rent keeps going up, wages are stagnating, and gentrification is tearing apart our community at the seams. It’s time to fight back.”
The day of action is being organized by the Autonomous Tenants Union and the Metropolitan Tenants Organization.
Demonstrators will call for implementation of the proposed Keeping the Promise Ordinance, which would give the Chicago City Council greater oversight of the Chicago Housing Authority. They will also advocate for legislation to provide just-cause eviction in Chicago and city inspections of apartments.
Additionally, the group is expected to push back on a proposed change to the city’s Residential Landlord and Tenant Ordinance.
A city ordinance, backed by the Chicago Association of Realtors, would give judges discretion on whether landlords are fined for failing to return security deposits plus interest to tenants. The fines are currently mandatory under the Residential Landlord and Tenant Ordinance
