Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner signed into law legislation that lays out protections for domestic workers in the state.
The Domestic Workers Bill of Rights, which was signed Friday and takes effect January 1, is meant to ensure that domestic workers in Illinois are paid no less than the minimum wage, receive at least one day off a week and have protections against sexual harassment.
Illinois now becomes the seventh state to adopt a Domestic Workers Bill of Rights, joining California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Massachusetts, New York and Oregon.
Under the measure, domestic workers in Illinois such as nannies, housecleaners and caregivers will be covered under the state’s Minimum Wage Law, the Wages of Women and Minors Act, the One Day Rest in Seven Act and provisions of the Human Rights Act.
The Illinois Domestic Workers’ Coalition, which led a multi-year campaign for the legislation, will hold a press conference Tuesday morning in Chicago to celebrate the law’s passage.
