An anti-Trump super PAC plans to file a complaint with the U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency against Melania Trump amid questions over her immigration status.
The Democratic Coalition Against Trump announced Monday that it intends to seek an “immediate and thorough investigation by U.S. Customs and Border Protection to determine whether Melania Trump, wife of the Republican nominee for President of the United States, violated our nation’s immigration laws.”
The group’s announcement comes after Melania Trump took to Twitter last Thursday to address questions raised about her immigration status dating back to when she first came to the United States.
“Let me set the record straight: I have at all times been in full compliance with the immigration laws of this country. Period,” she said in the statement. “Any allegation to the contrary is simply untrue. In July 2006, I proudly became a U.S. citizen. Over the past 20 years, I have been fortunate to live, work and raise a family in this great nation and I share my husband’s love for our country.”
The Democratic Coalition Against Trump also filed a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request last week seeking the public release of Melania Trump’s immigration records.
Scott Dworkin is senior advisor to the Democratic Coalition Against Trump, which describes itself as “an arm of Keep America Great PAC, a grassroots coalition aimed at making sure that Donald Trump never becomes president.”
“Donald Trump has been very vocal about his proposal to forcefully deport more than 12 million undocumented immigrants from our country,” Dworkin said in a statement Monday. “But ever since serious questions first arose about whether his own wife may have been an illegal immigrant, the reality TV star has been uncharacteristically tight-lipped. We’re filing this complaint because we believe that the public has the right to know if the Republican presidential nominee is a complete hypocrite.”
