There were 19 arrests made during police protests Saturday night in Chicago's Loop.
Protesters demonstrated at the Taste of Chicago before marching downtown and blocking traffic on Michigan Avenue and other streets.
The protests came in response to the fatal police shootings last week of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile in Louisiana and Minnesota, respectively, and the sniper attack in Dallas that left five police officers dead and seven others wounded. Two civilians were also injured in the Dallas attack.
"There needs to be more checks and balances on cops, and that's what the system is lacking," Chicago protester Tayla Moore said during Saturday's protests. "What we fear is that these cops are supposed to serve and protect and uphold law and justice and peace in our community -- and they're shooting us."
Police accountability activists are continuing their protests Monday with a series of demonstrations, including a 4:30 p.m. rally at Federal Plaza. Check back with Progress Illinois for our coverage of the afternoon rally, being organized by Black Lives Matter Chicago, the Chicago Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression and Trinity United Church of Christ.
