The East Chicago City Council voted Monday to remove Councilman Robert Battle, who is sitting in a Porter County jail.
The city council voted 8 to 0 at a hearing to remove Battle from his 3rd district seat, despite him having won re-election back in November while incarcerated. Battle is facing a possible sentence of life in prison after having allegedly fatally shot Reimundo Camarillo Jr. on October 12 in East Chicago. Battle, who claims the killing of Camarillo was done in self defense, is also facing charges surrounding his alleged possession of a firearm during a gun-trafficking crime.
Battle's sister, Kim Maxey, was at the hearing and plans to appeal the decision on his behalf.
