U.S. Rep. Robin Kelly (D-IL,2) is launching a new federal initiative aimed at reducing gun violence and promoting economic development in urban communities.
Kelly will announce the "UP (Urban Progress) Initiative" on Friday. The plan calls for developing "a comprehensive strategy of urban reinvestment to reduce gun violence and spur economic development in communities in the Chicago area and across the country," according to a news release.
As part of the initiative's launch, Kelly will lead a group of congressmen from Illinois and other states on a tour of "three community-based organizations that have successfully implemented progressive programs and strategies to reduce violence in their areas," according to her office.
The stops will include the South Side YMCA of Metro Chicago, Kids Off the Block and the Inner City Muslim Action Network (IMAN).
