Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan's 13th Ward Democratic Organization is putting its support behind Chicago Ald. Howard Brookins (21st) over long-time incumbent U.S. Rep. Bobby Rush.
The congressman said he was unsure of the reasoning behind Madigan's decision. "In 23 years, we haven't had any reason to have any major differences," Rush told the Sun-Times.
"To my recollection, I have never received an endorsement from the 13th Ward," Rush added.
Meanwhile, Brookins said he asked Madigan for his support and the legislative leader obliged, putting his organization's operatives on the street to get nominating signatures on the books for the alderman of 13 years.
"I've known the speaker for more than half of my life, since my father was a state representative," Brookins said. "I'm proud to say he's supporting me."
Madigan's organization typically supports incumbents, but the group is also going against Dorothy Brown in the Cook County Circuit Court Clerk's race, opting instead to back her challenger Michelle Harris, Chicago's 8th Ward alderman.
