Eastern Illinois University has issued layoff notices to slightly less staff than originally planned.
University President David Glassman sent a note to the college community stating that there would be 177 layoffs of civil service staff as opposed to the anticpated 198. The layoffs are set to take effect on March 12.
The layoffs are a direct effect of the ongoing state budget impasse, now in its eight month. Glassman, who called the cuts "difficult and disheartening," hopes that state lawmakers and the governor will reach a deal in order to avoid the need for the layoffs.
Earlier today, Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner gave his state budget address. Read our report on the address, and reaction, here.
