Chicago Finance Committee Advances $543 Million Property Tax Plan

By a 17-10 vote, the Chicago City Council's Finance Committee advanced Mayor Rahm Emanuel's proposed $543 million property tax increase to cover police and fire pensions on Tuesday.

According to the Chicago Sun-Times, the 10 "no" votes came from Alds. Leslie Hairston (5th), Roberto Maldonado (26th), Jason Ervin (28th), Scott Waguespack (32nd), Nick Sposato (36th), Brendan Reilly (42nd), Tom Tunney (44th), John Arena (45th), Harry Osterman (48th) and Debra Silverstein (50th).

The Finance Committee did not vote on other components of the mayor's budget Tuesday -- including the proposed $9.50 monthly garbage hauling fee and a $45 million property tax hike for school construction. The committee held off on those votes to allow more time for possible changes to the spending plan.

Finance Committee members are expected to meet again on Wednesday.
