Housekeepers at the Hotel Burnham in Chicago say their strenuous workloads are taking a toll on their bodies, and they want their employer to improve working conditions.
The housekeepers plan to rally Friday afternoon outside the hotel, 1 W. Washington St., to speak out on the issue. They will be joined by other Chicago hospitality workers and UNITE HERE Local 1 representatives.
"When I get home from work, my body hurts so much that I can't play with my son." said Karina Tufino, a Hotel Burnham housekeeper of 10 years. "Why should I have to choose between doing my job well and being a good mother?"
Hotel Burnham is one of four Chicago hotels operated by the Kimpton Hotel & Restaurant Group Inc. Workers at two Kimpton Chicago hotels, the Hotel Palomar and Hotel Allegro, are represented by UNITE HERE Local 1.
Since November 2014, Hotel Burnham and Hotel Monaco workers have been publicly organizing to form a union, according to UNITE HERE.
Hotel Monaco housekeepers, who have also raised concerns about the pain associated with their work, staged a similar protest in August to call for workplace safety improvements.
