Chuck Weaver, a Peoria City Council member at large, was tapped Sunday to fill Darin LaHood's former state Senate seat.
LaHood represented the state's 37th Senate district before he was elected last month as the new U.S. representative for Illinois' 18th congressional district. Ex-Congressman Aaron Schock previously held the seat.
Republican Party officials from the counties located in the state's 37th Senate district picked Weaver for the position. As part of his appointment, Weaver will represent the 37th Senate district seat until January 2017.
Information on when Weaver will be sworn into the Illinois Senate has not yet been provided.
"I am honored and humbled to have earned the trust of the selection committee. I am excited to get to work for the families of the 37th district," Weaver said in a statement. "With my background as a farm kid, my service on the city council dealing with issues facing our urban environment, and my background as a businessman, I have the skills that will allow me to effectively serve the residents of this district and the entire state of Illinois."
