Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner signed legislation on Friday aimed at preventing sexual assaults on college campuses and helping victims of such attacks.
Under the measure, HB 821, higher education institutions in Illinois will have to adopt comprehensive campus sexual violence policies and notify sexual assault survivors of their rights and options. Colleges also have to ensure that sexual assault victims have access to a confidential adviser who can walk them through obtaining medical and legal assistance.
The measure also calls for sexual violence awareness training for students and employees. Additionally, higher education institutions will have to establish a procedure through which sexual violence allegations are addressed.
