The Naperville City Council is weighing whether to increase the municipality's sales tax and garbage fee in an effort to tackle its fiscal issues, including a $6.8 million budget gap.
The city, which also says its cash reserves are $18 million short of what is required, is considering hiking the monthly garbage fee from $2 to $12.35 and adding as much as .5 percent to the sales tax, which is currently 7.25 percent.
According to city estimates, the proposed garbage fee and sales tax increases could mean $5 million and $8.5 million in new revenue for the city, respectively.
Council members could take up the revenue proposals at its September 15 meeting.
