The Illinois House approved legislation Tuesday that would privatize the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO).
Under the measure, approved by a 60-6 vote, DCEO would become a public-private partnership.
Also, the legislation, spearheaded by House Speaker Michael Madigan (D-Chicago), would eliminate the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency and give its responsibilities to DCEO. Additionally, the bill would make the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum a separate agency. Currently, the museum is under the preservation agency's control.
The measure includes a provision to sunset the legislation after three years of it being in effect.
