A Republican-backed measure to address rules governing state political hiring has been put forward in the Illinois legislature.
State Sen. Karen McConnaughay (R-St. Charles) introduced the bill, SB 981, which is supported by Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner and comes in response to the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) hiring issues that were unearthed in 2014.
However, the proposed bill seeks, among other things, restrictions on collective bargaining units.
Anders Lindall, a spokesman for AFSCME Council 31, tells the Associated Press, in part, that the legislation "would result in stripping thousands of public employees of their right to be represented by a union."
The measure is pending in the Senate Labor Committee.
