The Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) is throwing its support behind progressive Ald. John Arena's (45th) re-election bid.
The union endorsed the sitting alderman, who is one of Chicago Mayor Rham Emanuel's most vocal critics on the city council, over the weekend.
CTU President Karen Lewis said to union members in a statement that Arena has pushed "to ensure that Chicago's families and taxpayers aren't adversely affected by the mayor's anti-education agenda." Lewis said Arena "will continue his progressive efforts toward creating the city that Chicago's students deserve."
In response to the endorsement, Arena said, "I will continue to work with Chicago's teachers to provide high-quality public school options on the Northwest Side and throughout Chicago."
Three other aldermanic hopefuls are vying to unseat Arena, who the CTU also endorsed in the 2011 municipal election.
