Chicago's Zoning Board of Appeals will hold hearings on the first round of applications for potential medical marijuana dispensary locations in the city later this month.
The panel is expected to consider applications on October 17 from four groups looking to open medical marijuana dispensaries in Avondale, Brighton Park, the West Loop and Wicker Park.
Thirteen total medical marijuana dispensaries can operate across the city within the boundaries of various townships, under state law. Operators of medical marijuana dispensaries are required to obtain a special-use permit.
The Chicago Sun-Times reports that 16 marijuana businesses are vying for a permit to open dispensaries in two different city townships —West and Jefferson townships. Both of those townships can have a maximum of two dispensaries.
According to data released by the state Thursday, there are 214 applicants interested in opening medical marijuana dispensaries across Illinois. Under state law, as many as 60 total dispensaries can open in Illinois. The state will also allow up to 22 medical marijuana cultivation centers, and 159 groups have applied to open those facilities.
