Highland Teachers Strike Ends

A six-day teachers strike in Highland has ended.

The Highland Education Association ended the first-ever strike in the district after its members on Thursday approved a three-year contract by a 150-2 vote. The contract includes a 4.3 percent teacher pay bump over the three years of the contract. As part of the agreement, teachers will forfeit annual personal days for the next three years to make up for the lost school days during the strike.

Union and district officials had been in contract talks since April. The sticking points during the negotiation process surrounded salary increases and insurance costs. Madison County's town of Highland is located approximately 40 minutes northeast of St. Louis.
