A Chicago Sun-Times investigation shows that the city of Chicago rehired four people in recent years who were on the so-called "do-not-hire" list kept by the Department of Human Resources.
Two of those individuals currently work as assistants to Alds. John Pope (10th) and Walter Burnett (27th), according to the newspaper.
In light of the Sun-Times' findings, the city has decided to fire the two other workers, who were employed as truck drivers with the Department of Streets and Sanitation. Following the newspaper's report, mayoral spokeswoman Kelly Quinn said there has been a review “to ensure no other names had been overlooked,” adding that, “We have now put reforms into place that will ensure ineligible former employees do not get rehired.”
The two aldermanic assistants could remain city employees. Aldermen have mostly not followed the "do-not-hire" list over the years. Ald. Patrick O'Connor (40th) was able to sway his fellow council members last week to abide by the list, but only for new aldermanic hirings.
The list of former city employees who are not to be rehired began under the Daley administration in response to the Hired Truck scandal.
