Budget Bill Partially Funds Back Pay Owed To State Workers

Public employees who are waiting to receive at least $110 million in back pay from the state could possibly get some of their money soon.

The Illinois House on Wednesday signed off on a budget bill, HB 3793, that includes $50 million for the payment of back wages owed to state employees since 2011.

Gov. Pat Quinn's administration says about $110 million is owed to thousands of state workers, while AFSCME says the total amount due to employees is $112 million.

"This is a partial payment, but it's a step forward and long overdue," ASCME spokesman Anders Lindall told the State Journal-Register. "We're pleased. It's payment on what is the state's oldest back bill. We understand in these very difficult budget times there are constraints on what's possible. We're going to continue to work until every penny earned is paid to state employees."

Under the proposed budget measure, every impacted state worker would receive 45 percent of their unpaid wages, Lindall said.
