U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk (R-IL) pushed for an investigation into an Illinois veteran's hospital in the west Chicago suburb of Hines.
Kirk is questioning some $16.6 million in bonuses received at Edward Hines Jr. VA Hospital since 2011 as well as reported delays in care and potential coverups.
As a result of these allegations, Kirk, who was formerly a reservist in the U.S. Navy, pressed the inspector general of the U.S. Department of Veteran's Affairs to include Edward Hines Jr. VA Hospital in a national probe of similar facilities.
Meanwhile, U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) met with VA Secretary Eric Shinseki Thursday and wants a public report on Hines and other VA hospitals in the state.
“We need to acknowledge the serious charges, get to the bottom of these reports and hold those responsible accountable,” Durbin said.
