An investigative report from the U.S. Coast Guard about last month's BP Lake Michigan oil spill is complete and now under review by a Washington, D.C. hearing officer.
BP's refinery in Whiting, Indiana malfunctioned on March 24, spilling up to an estimated 1,630 gallons of oil into Lake Michigan.
Now that the Coast Guard's report has been finished, the hearing officer will determine what, if any, penalties the company will face, Coast Guard Lt. Brian Dykens told the Times of Northwest Indiana. That decision is expected to come within 30 days, Dykens said.
BP spokesman Scott Dean said the company is currently working to find out why the spill occurred.
This summer, the Coast Guard and the Environmental Protection Agency are expected to take another look at Lake Michigan and its shoreline to ensure that all the spilled oil has been removed. Additionally, the Coast Guard is looking into whether the company broke any laws under the Clean Water Act.
