Following a request from Commonwealth Edison Co., the Illinois Commerce Commission will decide whether to raise electricity rates next year to help pay for the utility's modernization of the electrical grid.
If approved, the increase means the average resident's monthly electricity bill will go up by $3 dollars. Regardless of their electricity provider, all energy customers would be impacted by the proposed rate increase.
ComEd said it has paid $275 million for system upgrades since the last rate hike this year, and the proposed rate increase for 2015 would cover those expenses. This year's rate increase tacked on about $5.50 to the average resident's monthly bill.
If approved, next year's rate hike would begin in January.
