By a 54-0 vote, the Illinois Senate on Tuesday advanced a bill that looks to ban the plastic microbeads used in hundreds of personal cosmetic products, like facial wash and body scrubs.
State Sen. Heather Steans (D-Chicago) sponsored the legislation, SB 2727, which now heads to the House for consideration.
As Progress Illinois recently reported, the super-tiny plastic beads have appeared in the Great Lakes by the tens of millions. The beads, which do not biodegrade, have been found in Lake Michigan and other Illinois bodies of water.
The microbeads absorb pollutants in the environment and pose a threat to fish and other aquatic life when ingested.
