Northwestern University has appealed the ruling by the regional director of the National Labor Relations Board, Peter Sung Ohr, who recently found that the college's football players should be allowed to unionize. The university argues that Ohr ignored important information in the case and twisted the facts.
"The regional director ignored the evidence of Northwestern’s primary commitment to the education of all of its student-athletes, evidence that fully supports that its student-athletes are primarily students, and not employees," Northwestern wrote in its appeal filed Wednesday with the NLRB in Washington, according to the Chicago Tribune.
The football players are set to vote on whether they should be represented by the College Athletes Players Association (CAPA) on April 25. CAPA has a week to file an opposing argument to the university's appeal. If the NLRB in Washington decides to hear Northwestern's appeal, both groups will have to file more paperwork arguing their respective sides of the case. Then the NLRB in Washington will determine whether to uphold, reverse or amend Sung Ohr's original ruling.
