Illinois school enrollment data show that the state's public school system is now comprised of mostly of minority students, the Chicago Tribune reported.
The population of white students in Illinois' public schools dropped to 49.76 percent this school year, according to the new fall enrollment data provided by the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) last month. This is the first time Latino, black, Asian and other minority students have together surpassed white student enrollment in the state's public school system, according to the newspaper.
The data may be different in the coming months, however, if enrollment numbers are revised by school districts. If the numbers are tweaked even slightly, it "could make all the difference" when it comes to the system's majority student population, ISBE spokeswoman Mary Fergus told the newspaper.
According to the fall data for this school year, there were 1,023,382 white students enrolled in Illinois public schools, while 1,033,110 of enrolled students were from other racial groups. Latino students made up nearly 25 percent of the population, while black students represented 18 percent of Illinois public school students, according to the data.
If the new numbers remain true, Illinois would be among 12 U.S. states that have a majority minority student population in its public schools.
