The state of Illinois wants reimbursement from furloughed federal workers who received unemployment benefits during the government shutdown.
The 577 federal workers who got unemployment insurance payments from the state of Illinois and back pay from the federal government will have to reimburse the Illinois Department of Employment Security, according to a Monday announcement from the agency.
The state is hoping to regain more than $231,000 in unemployment benefits that it doled out during the 16-day government shutdown. Workers who fail to pay the state back could see the funds come out of their next income tax return.
More than 2,900 federal workers in Illinois filed for unemployment insurance benefits, but only 577 collected payment.
