Disgraced former Bridgeport Mayor Max Schauf was sentenced to 18 months in federal prison Thursday for submitting phony invoices to the rural southeastern Illinois town while he was mayor and taking some of the money for personal use.
Schauf was handed a $5,000 penalty and is required to payback more than $54,000 to the small farming community of Bridgeport, located in Lawrence County.
Schauf was indicted in November by a federal grand jury in Benton, Illinois on three counts of mail fraud and one count of obstruction of justice. In May, the ex-mayor pleaded guilty to all the counts.
Schauf admitted that he took part in a scheme to defraud the city of Bridgeport and its residents by submitting false and fraudulent invoices, contracts and bills for services and equipment from July of 2008 through March of 2011. Schauf also admitted that he had obstructed justice by telling another person to give incorrect and misleading information to the Federal Bureau of Investigation when they were looking into the fraudulent activities.
