U.S. Reps. Luis Gutierrez (D-IL, 4), Jan Schakowsky (D-IL, 9) and six other congressmen were arrested Tuesday at an immigration reform demonstration at the National Mall, which was closed due to the government shutdown.
Those who participated in the afternoon "Camino Americano: March for Dignity and Respect" rally were calling on Congress to pass immigration reform legislation. Some protestors blocked 1st Street NW, and Capitol Police say about 200 people were arrested in all. They were charged with "crowding, obstructing and incommoding," reported NBC Washington.
Other U.S. House Representatives who were arrested include U.S. Reps. Joseph Crowley (D-NY, 7), Keith Ellison (D-MN, 5), Al Green (D-TX, 9), Raul Grivjalva (D-AZ, 3), John Lewis (D-GA, 5) and Charlie Rangel (D-NY, 15).
