Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak is heading to Chicago Thursday to launch a campaign to entice gay Chicagoans to marry in his city.
Rybak is scheduled to unveil his campaign at the Center on Halsted. Same-sex marriage became legal in Minnesota on August 1.
In response, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel made note of the Illinois legislature's recent failure to pass same-sex marriage legislation, saying that the move hurts the local economy.
"Thirteen states have extended marriage to all loving, committed couples – but Illinois has not. That is bad for Chicago, bad for Illinois, and bad for our local economy and the jobs it creates.”
The Williams Institute found that same-sex marriage could bring an additional $103 million in tourism and wedding spending in the state over three years' time.
