President Barack Obama has nominated Penny Pritzker for the job of U.S. Secretary of Commerce. Pritzker recently stepped down from her post on the Chicago Board of Education, reportedly in anticipation of the nomination.
Pritzker, who is a billionaire and part of one the nation’s wealthiest families, has been a crucial sponsor of Obama’s campaigns. She served as the president's national finance chair during his 2008 presidential run and introduced Obama to major fundraising connections during his 2004 senatorial race.
In addition to her work with Artemis Real Estate Partners, Pritzker Realty Group, and PSP Capital Partners, Pritzker seves on the board of Chicago-based Hyatt Hotels Corp., a hotel chain at odds with the labor union Unite Here since 2009.
If the U.S. Senate approves the nomination, Pritzker would be the third female Commerce Secretary and the third Chicagoan to serve in that position.
