The Chicago Teachers Union and allies organized by Stand Up! Chicago marched to the Hyatt Chicago in the River North neighborhood yesterday to protest the Chicago Public School's plan to close a reported 80 to 120 neighborhood schools. The Hyatt was selected as a protest spot because hotel board member Penny Pritzker also sits on the Chicago school board, and a developer received $5.2 million in city Tax Increment Finance money to build a Hyatt in the Hyde Park neighborhood. CTU Vice President Jesse Sharkey said at the protest, "If you close our schools, there will be no peace in the city."
The protest came as CPS is trying to delay any announcement on school closings until March 31. State law currently requires that CPS announce school actions by December 1.
