Chicago Activists Call On Ald. Burns To Support A $15 Minimum Wage (VIDEO)

Community activists protested outside Ald. Will Burns’ (4th) office Thursday morning, calling on the South Side alderman to support a $15 minimum wage in Chicago.

“We are tired of politicians, like Will Burns, ignoring the voice of the people,” said Adeline Bracey, a member of Action Now.

Bracey was one of roughly 50 protesters to march outside Burns’ Bronzeville neighborhood office, at 435 E. 35th St., chanting, “What do we want? $15! When do we want it? Now!” The state of Illinois’ minimum wage is $8.25, while the federal minimum is $7.25.

Chicagoans Get Fired Up At Minimum Wage Community Meeting (VIDEO)

A passionate crowd of Chicagoans made their case for and against raising the city's minimum wage to $15 an hour at a spirited community meeting Thursday night on the North Side. Progress Illinois was there for the meeting, held by Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel's recently formed Minimum Wage Working Group.

Report: 6 Million Pounds Of Toxic Industrial Pollution Discharged Into Illinois Waterways (VIDEO)

Industrial facilities discharged 6.1 million pounds of toxic chemicals into Illinois' rivers and streams in 2012, shows a new report by the Environment Illinois Research & Education Center.

The "Wasting Our Waterways" report ranks Illinois as the 13th worst U.S. state for the total volume of toxic industrial releases to waterways.

At the national level, polluting facilities dumped 206 million pounds of harmful chemicals into American waterways in 2012, according to the report. And some 8.39 million pounds of toxic pollution were discharged into the Great Lakes watershed. Ammonia, chromium and lead are among the chemicals released into Illinois' waterways, according to the report.
