Internal Poll Shows Most Business Executives Back Minimum Wage Hike, Other Pro-Worker Measures

Most U.S. business executives support policies to boost the minimum wage and provide workers with paid sick time, predictive scheduling and increased maternity and paternity leave, an internal poll shows.

The poll findings, obtained by the progressive watchdog group Center for Media and Democracy, clash with the policy positions of business groups fighting against such proposals.

Luntz Global, operated by GOP pollster Frank Luntz, conducted the poll of 1,000 U.S. business executives on behalf of the Council of State Chambers. Among those surveyed, 63 percent belong to a chamber of commerce.

According to the findings, 80 percent of survey respondents backed an increase in their state's minimum wage, compared to 8 percent who opposed the idea.

New Report Sheds Light On America's Top Paid 'Government Workers'

Contrary to what some may believe, America's top paid government workers are not public employees, argues a new report from the progressive watchdog group Center for Media and Democracy (CMD).

"America's highest paid government workers are not your local teachers, social workers or corrections officers," said CMD's Executive Director Lisa Graves. "Rather, America's highest paid government workers are the corporate executives who profit from reckless privatization deals across the country."

In the “Exposed: America’s Highest Paid Government Workers” report, CMD identifies six CEOs who "worked hard to privatize public services and who use taxpayer dollars to enrich themselves with outlandish salaries and benefits."

After reviewing shareholder lawsuits, criminal investigations, U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission sanctions and court settlements, CMD found that the six CEOs highlighted in the report collectively raked in more than $100 million in compensation largely funded by taxpayers over the past several years.

U.S. Rep. Schakowsky, Fellow Lawmakers Take Aim At ALEC's Upcoming Agenda

The American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) is once again under fire from critics, including U.S. Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL,9), following new revelations published Tuesday in The Guardian about the large conservative group.

The Guardian's report, based on a number of leaked ALEC documents, show that the group is reportedly creating a new 501(c)(4) social welfare organization called the "Jeffersonian Project." Critics say this new sister group is being formed in an attempt to skirt IRS rules that currently prevent ALEC from lobbying due to its 501(c)(3) charitable organization status. As a 501(c)(4) group, the Jeffersonian Project would be able to lobby, while also raking in anonymous donations.

U.S. Rep. Mark Pocan (D-WI,2), who spoke on an press call along with Schakowsky Wednesday about the recent ALEC news, argued that despite the group's current 501(c)(3) status, it's already one of largest lobbying organizations in the nation.
