Aldermanic Run-Off News And Notes

Including today, there are 14 days left until voters in 14 wards around Chicago cast ballots for the aldermanic candidates in run-off elections. Progress Illinois will have more updates from the races later this afternoon and in the coming days, but here's a morning round-up of recent election news.

  • Donations and candidate resources: Over at the State Board of Elections website, a spate of candidates up for election next month recently reported substantial in-kind and direct donations to their campaign funds. Ald. Latasha Thomas (17th Ward) noted a donation of "data lists" worth $1,000 from the For A Better Chicago PAC. In the 36th Ward race, Ald. John Rice reported a $1,972.61 mail and literature donation from UNITE-HERE Local 1, while 6th Ward Ald. Freddrenna Lyle submitted staff salaries from AFSCME and a mailing worth nearly $10,700 from Mayor-elect Rahm Emanuel's New Chicago Committee. Early and Often reported (subscription required) that Emanuel's committee has contributed to six out of the seven candidates he's endorsed; the group itself said on Monday it took in 9 donations worth $85,000 on March 18. Forty-third Ward aldermanic candidate Tim Egan recently took in a big haul, reporting $29,000 in direct donations on March 21 and 22, as well as a mailing For A Better Chicago paid for worth more than $17,000. Check all the large donations to the candidates here.
  • The battle for the 50th Ward: Another of the candidates Emanuel's political committee is supporting is Debra Silverstein, who is seeking to unseat longtime incumbent Ald. Bernard Stone on the far North Side. The mayor-elect's group paid $8,389.89 for a mailing for Silverstein, and two SEIU affiliates (including the union's state council, which sponsors Progress Illinois; other candidates mentioned in this post SEIU is backing include Lyle) last Sunday donated $5,000 each to Silverstein's fund. The Tribune, meanwhile, has a story out today about a political committee called the Concerned Citizens of the 50th Ward (we saw this group's yard signs on Election Day last month, which misleadingly linked Stone with Emanuel). "The political committee ... arranged mail pieces, door hangers, automated calls and yard signs that backed Stone and criticized foe Debra Silverstein, the records show. Until the committee was challenged, it did not disclose that its money came from Stone’s campaign," the Tribune reports. The state board of elections will hold a hearing about the group next week.
  • Candidate debates: As noted at the top of this post, we'll have some more reports about the aldermanic runoffs soon. But Chicago Tonight has showcased the candidates in a number of wards, including the 50th, 17th, 24th, 15th, and more. Scroll through the television program's aldermanic interviews at their website.
