Organizations serving the immigrant community are demanding that the state pay out the money owed to them for services performed during the last fiscal year. The groups warn that if payments are not received by September 20, they will take part in a one-day strike on the following day. According to a recent survey (PDF) by the Illinois Coalition of Immigrant and Refugee Rights (ICIRR), 42 organizations are collectively owed $7.2 million for work done during 2009. As a result, many of the groups have laid off workers, had employees take furlough days, and reduced services. ICIRR also found that several organizations may have to shut their doors if the state doesn't pay up soon. Meanwhile, the need for these services doesn't recede when the funding dries up. At the recent announcement of the potential service strike, one man explained how the Polish American Association -- which provides homemaker services -- has played a pivotal role in keeping his 82-year-old father healthy and largely off the government dole.
Representatives from the coalition of immigrant groups are expected to meet with the governor's newly-appointed chief of staff, Michelle Saddler, later this week to discuss how to expedite payments.
