"No Snitching" Means No Peace

Today's installment of the Chicago Sun-Times' excellent series on crime takes a look at the 'no-snitch' code on the city's streets. A toxic combination of distrust for the police and fear of retailation, the paper found, creates incentives for scores of shooting victims and witnesses in the Windy City to stay silent. Law enforcement officers are trying to overcome the no-snitch code by using new strategies like videotapping initial conversations with victims and witnesses, but only time will tell if those techniques will work.
