Chicago Religious Leaders Blast Arizona's SB 1070

While the U.S. Senate contemplates pushing immigration reform off their agenda in 2010, Arizona is moving quickly to implement its new punitive and highly-controversial immigration bill. In Chicago today, representatives from local Christian, Jewish, and Muslim congregations held a joint press conference inside the storied Holy Name Cathedral to oppose the enactment of SB 1070. Holding "picture frames" illustrating that any of the assembled leaders could be stopped in Arizona by police, they also urged federal lawmakers to approve comprehensive immigration reform immediately. "We are deeply concerned that this largely immigrant nation, representing the world’s rich diversity of cultures and religions, should be found indicting the broad base of today’s immigrants as threats to the nation’s security, economic health, and character," said Rev. Paul Rutgers of the Council of Religious Leaders of Metropolitan Chicago. Watch a clip below:
