What's becoming clear is that Republican gubernatorial nominee Bill Brady is big on bravado when it comes to his proposed state budget fixes, but wishy-washy on the details. Throughout the primary campaign, he touted his plan to institute a 10 percent "across the board" cut to state government departments, but now he claims that he actually meant a 10 percent overall reduction in state spending. Similarly, Brady has repeatedly pledged to "eliminate" the Illinois State Board of Education. Most recently, he made the claim on yesterday's edition of WTTW's Chicago Tonight. But when pressed by interviewer Carol Marin, Brady made clear that he actually wanted to halve the department's budget (full video here):
BRADY: I call for elimination of the State Board of Education: $80 million a year spent. ... Now, I'd create a downsized department, so that we provide the necessary --
MARIN: So it wouldn't be a total $80 million.
BRADY: No, but let's say half -- $40 million.
"Downsizing" is not the same as "eliminating."
