Food Stamps At More Farmers Markets

Here's some good news from City Hall. Hoping to connect undeserved Chicagoans with fresh, local food, the mayor's Office of Special Events announced a pilot program this week that will allow folks enrolled in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) to use their food stamp cards (known as LINK cards) at farmers markets. Specifically, the city will supply Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) equipment to five markets throughout the city -- located at Lincoln Square, South Shore Bank, Daley Plaza, Division Street, and Beverly. The program will be run by the Experimental Station, a Woodlawn-based nonprofit that raised money for this initiative and has successfully accepted LINK payments at its 61st Street market for two years.
