The majority of Americans are disgusted with the legislative bottleneck in Washington. But Republican Senate candidate Mark Kirk? He's celebrating.
Politico obtained audio of a speech Kirk gave at a Republican dinner in Winnetka last week. Discussing GOP opposition to President Obama's health care reform package, Kirk declared that Republicans are on their way "to making this guy a one-termer." Clearly, he is embracing his party's "just say no" strategy, as exemplified by his colleague John Shimkus.
Let's set aside the fact that Kirk seems to share little empathy for the 30 million uninsured Americans the Democratic plan would cover. From a strictly political perspective, running directly against the president in his home state is probably not a great strategy. Politico points to a Research 2000 poll taken late last month that shows Obama with a 60 percent favorability rating in Illinois. Only 36 percent view him unfavorably. Rasmussen found similar results when it surveyed voters this month, noting that "those figures are much higher than Obama’s ratings nationally."
UPDATE (1:30 p.m., 6/29/2010): The DailyKos, who commissioned a poll mentioned in this article, has renounced all of their polling conducted through Research 2000.
