Chicago Public Schools (CPS) students rallied Monday afternoon against the recent layoffs of nearly 1,000 teachers and support staff.
The demonstration at the Thompson Center was also meant to "show solidarity with the Chicago Teachers Union in their contract negotiations."
Student protesters spoke "about the ongoing education crisis in Chicago, what it means to them and how it impacts their day-to-day life," according to an announcement.
CPS fired nearly 1,000 staffers -- including 494 teachers -- earlier this month. CPS employees impacted by the layoffs will have an opportunity to apply for 1,000 open positions within the district.
