Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner signed a bill Friday that decriminalizes small amounts of marijuana, making the state the 17th in the nation to adopt such a measure.
Under the legislation, those caught in possession of 10 grams or less of marijuana in Illinois would face a fine of up to $200.
The measure also changes the zero-tolerance DUI law in Illinois regarding marijuana. Now, only drivers with a THC level of 5 nanograms or higher in their blood would face DUI charges.
The new law takes effect immediately.
