A new union at Northern Illinois University has been certified by the Illinois Labor Relations Board.
The United Faculty Alliance of Northern Illinois University is set to represent some 600 tenured and tenure-track faculty members. The group filed an intent to unionize back in April and is now taking steps to prepare for collective bargaining.
"With a union, we are now able to negotiate for our future, thanks to the resolve of NIU faculty," Rosemary Feurer, associate history professor at NIU, said in a written statement. "We look forward to forming our bargaining committee, which will work in good faith to negotiate a contract fair to the faculty and the students we serve."
