Metra board members voted Friday to increase fares come February by an average of 10.8 percent. The board approved the plan unanimously.
The fare increases, as part of Metra's 2015 budget, will be different depending on how far customers travel and what kind of tickets they purchase. Monthly passes, for example, will go up between 10.9 percent to 18.6 percent, which works out to be a $15 to $30 increase.
Metra plans to address its $27.3 million budget deficit with the additional revenue. The funds will also be used in part to pay for new modernization efforts.
