A former clerk in the Cook County Assessor's office has been arrested for fraudulently collecting some $112,000 in property tax refunds.
Dionne Cooper of Hazel Crest is charged with official misconduct and theft of government property for clearing more than 100 fraudulent "certificate of error refunds" or refunds for overpaid property taxes.
Between October 2009 and April 2012, she and an accomplice processed the refund applications, with the checks being sent to the other party who cashed them and shared the proceeds with Cooper. She reportedly left the Assessor's office in May of 2012 and began working at the Harvey Park District and is still employed there. Cooper is also an elected school board member for the Prairie-Hill Elementary School District.
She was held on $25,000 bond after a court date on Thursday.
