WATCH: Don't Frack Our Water Rally In Downtown Chicago
People across Illinois are pushing back against legislation to bring hydraulic fracturing, better known as fracking, to the Prairie State.
This afternoon, environmental advocates are holding a protest at the Thompson Center to call on lawmakers to pass a moratorium on fracking, which injects water, sand and chemicals into the ground using high pressure to crack open dense rocks in order to extract oil and gas. Industry advocates and some lawmakers are touting it as a boon for the economy and a job creator, but environmentalists and opponents of the process say those benefits could come at the high cost of clean air and water. Opponents also argue that the process could cause health problems for those living near fracking sites.
