After a year of unsuccessful contract negotiations with the University
of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, workers of the Service Employees
International Union (SEIU) Local 73 voted to authorize a three-day
strike, which begins today.
The 775 university workers represented by the union are responsible for meal service and custodial work on the campus.
spokesman Adam Rosen told the Chicago Tribune the university dorms may
not get cleaning services, meal service could be delayed, and mail
delivery might slow down as a result of the strike.
He said the union wants the college to present workers with a fair offer.
of Illinois spokeswoman Robin Kaler told the newspapers that university
staff will be redistributed throughout the campus to compensate and
carry out workers’ “most essential services” during the strike
certainly don’t intend for it to affect students,” she said. “It’s the
week before spring break. We’ll serve food – hot food. We’ll maintain
the halls as best we can.”
Kaler said “whenever the union is ready to talk” the university will to continue negotiations.
